    About This Center

    The Research Center of Excellence at UT Health San Antonio consists of two departments at our university that collaborate to support individuals affected by Lewy body dementia (LBD):

    1. The Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, the only National Institute on Aging (NIA) Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in Texas.
    2. The Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Division, a recognized Parkinson’s Foundation Comprehensive Care Center.

    Comprehensive Care

    We provide compassionate, multidisciplinary, personalized care to support patients and families navigating LBD at every stage of their journey, addressing their unique goals and clinical needs.

    Evaluations and neuropsychological testing are offered to patients in English or Spanish with bilingual providers. Our geriatrics team provides home and assisted living care options designed to enhance the management of comorbidities and improve functioning within the home environment. Additionally, we offer ongoing support groups for patients and their families, along with valuable education and resources. This ensures comprehensive care and support is available every step of the way.

    Advancing Care and Research

    At UT Health San Antonio, we are dedicated to improving our understanding and treatment of LBD through advanced research and clinical trials. We focus on developing new diagnostic tools, effective treatments and support strategies for caregivers. We also encourage families to get involved in these crucial efforts.

    Sarah Horn, MD

    Dr. Sarah Horn is a neurologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The neurologists’ craft of making bedside diagnoses, coupled with the anticipation of upcoming major scientific breakthroughs in the field, inspired her to become a movement disorders specialist. With a research interest in clinical trials, she is a Parkinson Study Group investigator and a site investigator for multiple clinical trials for Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. She is also the program director of the movement disorders fellowship at UT Health San Antonio so that she can train the next generation of neurologists and is director of the University Hospital Parkinson’s disease multidisciplinary clinic where she provides comprehensive care for those with Parkinson’s disease.

    Jeremy Tanner, MD MPH

    Dr. Jeremy Tanner is a cognitive/behavioral neurologist with a clinical expertise in Lewy Body and other causes of dementia. Since witnessing the impact of dementia on his own family, his driving passion has been to positively impact other families affected by neurodegenerative diseases and dementia. He leads a multidisciplinary clinic at the Glenn Biggs Institute at UTHSA to provide comprehensive care to patients and families affected by LBD and other neurodegenerative diseases, including those with early-onset disease. He is an investigator in the South Texas Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and engaged in clinical research to understand the natural history of LBD and other dementias, and translational research to advance biomarkers to improve early detection, enhance accurate diagnosis, and guide precision care and therapy for older adults affected by LBD and other neurodegenerative diseases.
