The Research Center of Excellence is part of the UW Memory & Brain Wellness Center (MBWC), which is based at the UW Medicine Harborview campus. The center works closely with the Movement Disorders groups located at the UW main campus and the Veteran’s Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System (VA). The MBWC multidisciplinary clinic team includes four neurologists, two psychiatrists, two geriatricians, a full time social worker, an ARNP, four neuropsychologists, a neurogeneticist, and a primary care liaison.
The clinic provides expert diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support for individuals experiencing changes in memory and thinking due to neurodegenerative brain diseases. The team aims to help patients discover new ways to optimize their strengths and promote overall well-being. In addition, the MBWC’s Community Education and Impact Program offers educational resources and group workshops for people living with dementia and their care partners, as well as connection to services and dementia-friendly activities in the community at large, such as art classes, garden walks, drum circles, and Alzheimer’s cafés. Many MBWC clinicians work on research projects at the UW Alzheimer’s Research Center (ADRC) including clinical trials geared towards symptom prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions.
